Getting started as a fire investigator

In Firefighters Seeking Investigators, children in grades 7 & 8 (ages 9 – 12) are challenged to work like a real fire investigator to find out the cause of the fire at Ward’s house in Milan. Via the residents and bystanders you will find out various pieces of information. You need this information to make the timeline match. You can also search through the house for the possible objects that caused the fire.

Teaching good behavior

It was the wish of the Dutch Burns Foundation to show children in a playful way how to properly handle electrical appliances. An important part of this was to make clear that it does not always take fire to start a fire. By using the fire triangle (oxygen, fuel and temperature) to let children draw their conclusion about the fire they learn, for example, that chargers can indeed cause a fire if they cannot get rid of their heat.

In addition, all objects that you can find in the house are named what the possible risks are and how you can handle them safely.

Individual and classroom

Firefighters Looking for sleuths can be played at home as well as in the classroom on the IWB. When developing the game, we looked at the different steps you need to perform and how this would be fun and challenging both individually and in the classroom.

Impact

Participation in the game during fire prevention weeks was a great success. In one month the game was played 50,000 times. And on wiki-wise (platform for teachers to find online content), Firefighters seek sleuths gets5 out of 5 stars.

The game can be played at firefightersearch.com.

More and more fires are caused by (faulty) electrical appliances or incorrect charging behavior. The reason for the Dutch Burn Foundation to draw attention to this during the fire prevention weeks 2019. In order to reach as many children as possible and spread their message in the best possible way, we have developed the digital game Fire Brigade Searches for Scavengers together with them.
